The NYISO Distributed Energy Resource Participation Model (DER PM) is a new opportunity for commercial real estate (CRE) businesses to significantly increase their demand response (DR) revenue.
The NYISO Distributed Energy Resource Participation Model (DER PM) is a new opportunity for commercial real estate (CRE) businesses to significantly increase their demand response (DR) revenue.
The DER PM aims to connect low-to-zero-emission DERs to wholesale electricity markets. The DER PM simplifies market participation by providing the resources to access all market programs under a single registration. Unlike the previous model, where owners of DERs had to choose between participating in the Energy and Ancillary Services markets, the DER PM enables co-optimization across the Energy, Ancillary Services, and Capacity markets. In other words, the DER PM unlocks additional value for customers by treating virtual power plants more like traditional power plants.
Enrolling in the DER PM requires working with a NYISO-approved provider that has completed integrations with New York Transmission Owners. Voltus has been at the forefront of bringing this new opportunity to customers and was the first aggregator to register resources under the DER PM.
CRE customers have decided to enroll in DER PM with Voltus. Continue reading to understand their decision-making process.
A large commercial real estate customer in Manhattan was interested in enrolling in the DER PM but had concerns that additional DR participation would impact tenant comfort. After meeting with the Voltus team, the customer discovered they could maintain standard operations by using cogeneration to reduce their load for up to 8 hours. By doing so, they could increase their revenue by 93%!
Another CRE customer in Manhattan began exploring switching to the DER PM after attending a Voltus-hosted webinar and lunch. Voltus had already increased their DR earnings by 317% by optimizing the customer’s nominations, but the customer was eager to find even more ways to increase their earnings.
The Voltus team did additional analysis on the customer’s operations and discovered that by adding automation, the site could respond within 30 minutes to DR dispatches and unlock 49% more value compared to SCR by enrolling in Operating Reserves. Moving forward, this fast-response program will only be available to customers enrolled in the DER PM.
The DER model offers an exciting opportunity for CRE sites to increase DR revenue! Contact info@voltus.co to determine eligibility.
