Demand response (DR) pays energy consumers to reduce or shift their electricity usage in response to energy shortages, price increases, high demand, or grid emergencies. Demand response supports a more resilient, stable, and cleaner electric grid – grid operators and utilities pay large energy consumers to temporarily conserve energy or switch to backup generators to prevent blackouts and brownouts.
The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) offers a program called Operating Reserves (OR). OR participants are called upon to curtail electricity load for short periods of time when the grid is stressed. OR enables organizations to get paid for these temporary reductions in electricity usage, which help the AESO ensure grid reliability across Alberta.
Voltus speaks the language of cash and offers transparency into the total expected value of curtailing or shifting electricity usage.
